MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Two hikers who were reported overdue Monday night on the North Country Trail in northern Marquette County have been found safe.
The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office says the two 65-year-old women, from the Flint area, were hiking a 20-mile section of the trail from Mulligan Plains to the McCormick Wilderness tract.
They were dropped off around 10 a.m. Monday and were expected to meet their driver at 7 p.m. on County Road 607 in Michigamme Township. When they had not arrived by 9 p.m., the driver contacted authorities.
The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Team responded and found the women shortly after 3 a.m. Tuesday.
Both hikers were in good health and were taken to their waiting ride.
Deputies say the women encountered rougher-than-expected trail conditions, along with rain, which slowed their progress.
