Rosen became the Wildcats’ all-time leading scorer
MARQUETTE, Mich. — Senior captain Luca Rosen (London, England) has been named GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week, announced by the conference today.
The forward had a historic afternoon at the NMU Soccer Field on Saturday, scoring four goals in the ‘Cats 7-1 win over Jamestown University. Rosen broke numerous NMU men’s soccer records on Saturday, most notably becoming the program’s record holder for career goals.
Luca was three goals back of matching Sam Popp’s goal-scoring record (2016-2018, 16 goals) heading into the weekend, and rattled off four to not only match, but surpass Popp, and now stands alone at the top of the record book, all doing so in front of home fans in Marquette, Michigan.
“I knew coming into today I needed four goals, but I thought, ‘ah, maybe not today’, and maybe I would have saved it for later in the season, but I found a way to do it,” added the Wildcat forward in a post-game interview on Saturday afternoon. “And it was special to do it at home. I would much rather have done it here than away, and with all the home fans, it was really awesome. Great support today, as always.”
Rosen also broke numerous NMU single-game records: most goals in a game (4), most points in a game (8), fastest two goals scored (2:29), and fastest three goals scored (9:58).
“No surprise here, a well-deserved award for an epic day,” added head coach Alex Fatovic. “Four goals and the all-time NMU scoring record. What a day Luca had, and the scary thing is we know he’s actually capable of more. Back to work for the team; big week with conference play starting, but very pleased to celebrate a terrific young man’s amazing day. Well done, Luca!”
Rosen now stands one point away from tying Popp’s career points record of 40. Currently at 39 career points with NMU, one goal or two assists will see Luca stand alone at the top once again.
Rosen’s four tallies bring his season totals to eight goals and one assist for 17 points in five games. At the time of writing, Rosen paces the entire Division II landscape in goals and points and is second in shots on goal with 14.
The Wildcats now have its sights set on GLIAC conference play, opening with a trip to Saginaw Valley and Davenport this coming weekend.
