MANISTIQUE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Manistique Area Schools administrators have addressed an incident on Thursday involving a student, live ammunition, and weapons.
According to a community letter written by Superintendent Matt Lukshaitis, school personnel became aware that a student had a loaded magazine visible through the windows of a vehicle driven to the school. After searching the vehicle, personnel also found a machete and an ax.
The school immediately contacted law enforcement. The student was removed from the school, and the magazine, machete, and ax are now in police custody. Lukshaitis says that the incident is now in the hands of law enforcement.
“We must emphasize that at no time was there a threat to students, staff, or anyone else at the school,” the superintendent stated in his letter. “The situation was addressed promptly and appropriately, and there was no active threat to the school community. The safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our highest priorities. We appreciate the cooperation of law enforcement and our staff in responding to this situation and ensuring that it was handled safely.”
Lukshaitis continued, “We understand that news of an incident involving live ammunition and weapons on school property can be concerning. We will continue to provide information as appropriate while respecting student privacy and the ongoing law-enforcement process.”
Lukshaitis thanks the school community for its support as the district works to maintain a safe environment for its students.
