WASHINGTON, D.C. – We’re a few days away from the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks. There are many events that honor those who died in the attacks and in this event, Steel Across America brought a nearly 17-thousand pound steel beam that was recovered from the World Trade Center to the White House. DC is one of their final stops in their cross-country tour.
With the White House in the background, the President participated in the Tunnel to Towers Foundation’s “Steel Across America” event on the Ellipse to honor the upcoming 25th anniversary of the September 11th attacks.
“We will never forget the immortal heroes,” said President Donald Trump during the event.
The Foundation was created to honor firefighter Stephen Siller, an off-duty FDNY firefighter who rushed to the WTC to help and died trying to save others. The Foundation has honored Siller’s legacy by delivering mortgage free homes to Gold Star and fallen first responder families.
As part of the Foundation, Steel Across America is a nationwide campaign that transports this 21-foot steel beam, weighing close to 17-thousand pounds, across the US. The beam was recovered from the south tower after the attacks. They displayed it at Tuesday’s event, which they said is a symbol of sacrifice, strength, and the unbreakable American spirit.
“This battered piece of steel here today on the Ellipse is a reminder that America is blessed with a strength no fire can consume, no evil can conquer, and no terror can destroy,” said the President at the event.
This stop in DC is one of the final legs for the Foundation’s Steel Across America tour. Over the course of four months, Tunnel to Towers traveled with this beam to 41 stops in more than 21 states bridging generations, connecting those who lived through 9/11 with those too young to remember, ensuring that we will never forget.
“When we see this steel, we’re reminded that no matter what threat or challenge comes our way, America will fight,” said the President at the event. “America will endure, and America will prevail.”
