ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – At the U.P. State Fair, attendees can catch newborn animals taking their first steps.
All week long, the Miracle of Life building is filled with pregnant sheep and cows. Some are expected to give birth by Sunday, while others have already had their babies. There is also an incubator with baby chicks hatching every day.
Exhibitor Nikki Campbell has more than 100 ewes on her farm. In March, 20 were hand-picked to breed for the exhibit.
“We have our best stock up here for the fair,” Campbell said. “We hope for twins out of each one. We’ve already gotten two sets of triplets, and I actually had some born early at home. We left four ewes and six babies.”
The Miracle of Life exhibit teaches fairgoers about how farm animals are bred. It also gives them a firsthand look at a new life just as it is beginning.
“They’re cute, number one,” laughed Campbell. “Everybody likes to see a cute baby! It’s nice for kids to see what farmers go through, especially with the birthing of the lambs and taking care of the lambs. Same with the cows and watching the chicks hatch. It’s exciting for everybody, really.”
The Miracle of Life building is located next to the Swine Barn. Click here to see a map of the fairgrounds.
