MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – For the twentieth year in a row, Silver Creek Church in Harvey opened its doors, and its arms, to families across the region.
Hundreds of folks lined up in their cars this morning for the church’s annual backpack SOS Drive, where children pre-K through twelfth grade received backpakcs, school supplies, hygiene kits, and vouchers for free clothing. No registration was required and children didn’t even need to be present, the drive-thru format making it as easy as possible for families to get what they need heading into the school year.
Kevin Taylor, the Lead Pastor at Silver Creek Church, says that this year, the giveaway went beyond the classroom. “Besides the backpacks and school supplies, we have lots of different beverages and snacks, garbage bags, clorox bleach, toilet bowl cleaner, paper towels, just lots of things that are really practical for families,” says Taylor. “And when people see these things, their eyes just light up, because they just need these things.”
The event is supported by several community partners including Convoy of Hope and the Walmart Foundation. Silver Creek Church says they plan to keep doing the drive-thru as long as the community needs it.
