ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – At the polls on August 4, Delta County voters widely supported a millage renewal for the Delta Solid Waste Management Authority.
For the last decade, the Authority’s landfill operations, recycling programs, and household hazardous waste disposal services have been funded by a rate of .300 mills. On Election Day, nearly 68% of voters renewed the millage at a rate of .297.
“We’re thrilled,” Administrative Manager Jessica Ketcham said. “It really means the world. We love what we are able to do for the community. To know that the community supports that and cares about that too, it really kind of warms your heart.”
According to Ketcham, the renewal will ensure residents can continue utilizing the Authority’s current services without experiencing price increases for another ten years.
“It means that Delta County residents can bring in recycling to the recycling center with no additional charges for your papers, your plastics,” she said. “Our household hazardous waste program will continue to be free of charge, as well as our composting options as well.”
The Authority aims to continue growing its recycling program, with the goal of accepting new kinds of materials in the future.
