On Tuesday, the majority of Delta County voters cast their ballots in favor of funding for public services.
The August 4 ballot included a millage renewal proposal for the Delta Solid Waste Management Authority. For the last ten years, landfill operations, recycling programs, and household hazardous waste disposal services have been funded by a rate of .300 mills. The authority sought a renewal at a rate of .297 mills.
According to unofficial results posted by the County Clerk’s Office to enhancedvoting.com, 67.96% of voters supported the Delta Solid Waste Management millage renewal.
Also on the ballot was a millage proposal for the Delta Area Transit Authority (DATA). Currently, DATA’s demand-response services are funded by individual millages in Escanaba, Gladstone, and the townships of Bay de Noc, Bark River, Brampton, Ensign, Ford River, Masonville, and Rapid River. Those millages are set to expire at the end of this year or next year. The proposal would replace those individual millages .689 mills. Being a county-wide millage, it would allow DATA to expand its services to the entire county. The millage would also lead to extended hours of operation for DATA, including Saturday rides and Friday night rides.
According to the unofficial results posted by the County Clerk’s Office to enhancedvoting.com, 65.18% of voters supported the Delta Area Transit Authority millage proposal.
While official numbers have not yet been confirmed, this year’s primary drew at least 10% more voters to the polls than the 2024 primary.
