MANISTIQUE, Mich. (WZMQ) – On Tuesday, August 4, Schoolcraft County voters will be asked to vote for or against continued funding for local conservation efforts.
The Schoolcraft Conservation District is seeking a renewal of its existing millage, which was passed in 2018 and is set to expire in 2028. A rate of .2132 mills would be in place from 2028 through 2037.
The Conservation District estimates that the renewal would raise $107,563 per year—about half of the District’s annual revenue. The money generated through the millage supports Schoolcraft Conservation District programs, staff member salaries, grant matching, utilities, equipment, and other everyday costs.
If the millage proposal does not pass this August or November, it would appear on the ballot again in the next election cycle. If it fails altogether, current Conservation District staffing and programming could be cut significantly.
