MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Voters in the city of Marquette visited their polling locations with only one item on the ballot on Tuesday, for the Marquette Area Public Schools infrastructure bond proposal.
The MAPS proposal includes just over $59 million dollars in facility improvements within the next 28 years, with an estimated tax impact of 1.55 mills per $1,000 of taxable property value. Both Marquette city clerks say the polling locations in town saw a high amount of foot traffic over the single item this election day, next to early and absentee ballots already sent in.
“For such a small ballot, there’s been a great turnout. It’s been very steady at both locations in the city, which we love to see” said Rachel Quayle, Deputy City Clerk. “These smaller elections are equally as important as a larger election.”
“In-person turnout has been a little higher than I was expecting,” said City Clerk, Kyle Whitney. “We did offer early voting in this election, and we’ve got thousands of absentee ballots that our workers are also processing.”
