HOUGHTON, Mich. (WZMQ) – The City of Houghton has received a unique designation in environmental excellency.
Houghton has been deemed a Bird City for its commitment to conservation, habitat protection, and sustainable practices, as the Keweenaw Peninsula is notably a final stop for birds heading north.
Several Lower Peninsula communities have received similar recognition, but Houghton is the first to be given High Flyer status, the most prestigious in the state.
Partners involved in the Bird City effort include the City of Houghton, Copper Country Bird Club, Keweenaw Invasive Species Management Area, Keweenaw Land Trust, Keweenaw Outdoor Recreation Coalition, Keweenaw Wild Bird REC, Keweenaw Wild Ones Chapter, Michigan Technological University, The Nature Conservancy and Visit Keweenaw.
“We’re really proud of the work that we’ve done,” said City of Houghton Community and Business Development Manager, Danielle Perkowitz. “It’s a testament to all of the awesome organizations and community members here doing incredible things for Houghton.”
