MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – On Wednesday evening at the Peter White Public Library, a Northern Michigan University Social Work Masters cohort gathered local leaders to discuss how they’ve been able to cultivate and empower their own communities.
Four panelists were chosen to lead the evening, with backgrounds in social work, business, student experience and NMU residence life, each bringing a unique vision of community to the conversation. This included NMU Residence Advisor, Kaitlyn Straschinske, Associate VP of Northern Student Experience, Jeff Korpi, Founder of Queen City Running Company, Kevin Thomsen, and Clinical Programs Supervisor of Pathways Community Mental Health, Ashley Jenema.
The panel was Moderated by Women’s Center Program Director, Hannah Holma, discussing experiences in inclusiveness, making personal connections for further impacts, and strengthening movements to push for change.
First year Masters of Social Work student, Rachael Phillips-Haroski says engaging with a supportive circle is essential to living in the Upper Peninsula.
“In our area, we don’t always receive as much funding or resources as others do, so there is a lot of emphasis on the importance of community up here,” she said. “Especially in times of tragedy or in times of celebration, it’s important to teach the community how to get together and advocate for their wants and needs.”
Over the semester, the cohort of 13 Social Work Policy Practice (SW551) students split up into five groups, covering the event’s planning and coordination.
