Avery Lorinser scores three goals, adds one assist
ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan women’s lacrosse team (7-3, 1-1 GLIAC) fell to the Grand Valley State Lakers (2-7, 1-0 GLIAC) by a margin of 9-4 on Friday.
Avery Lorinser came away with four points on three goals and an assist, and Vanessa Carrico also found the back of the net with a goal of her own. Meanwhile, on the defensive end, Natalie Thomas led the Wildcats in caused turnovers with three while Sophie Langsdale recovered a game high three ground balls. Lauren Esposito recorded six saves in the loss.
How it happened
The defenses of both teams would look to set the tone in the opening quarter of action as NMU goaltender Lauren Esposito recorded three saves in the first 15 minutes of action, but the GVSU defense did well to protect their net as well, only allowing two shots on target in the opening quarter. The Lakers were able to open the scoring as Grand Valley’s Ella Boose struck first after a quick clear in transition, and she would follow that up with another goal on the ensuing possession to extend the lead to 2-0. Avery Lorinser would then get NMU on the board with just over two minutes remaining in the quarter, but Boose managed to complete the hat trick before the quarter break to have GVSU ahead 3-1 after the first 15 minutes.
Grand Valley was able to tack on two more goals in the second quarter as the Wildcats trailed 5-1 going into the halftime break.
Vanessa Carrico opened up the scoring in the second half for the Wildcats off of a feed inside by Lorinser, and a few minutes later, Lorinser scored her second of the day to pull NMU back within two. However, Boose would once again have the answer for GVSU, and the Lakers scored a pair to push their lead back out to four once again. Lorinser was able to draw a free position attempt with three minutes to play in the quarter, the first free position attempt of the day for either side, and she capitalized on the opportunity to give herself a hat trick and cut the deficit to 7-4 going into the final period.
The Wildcats would continue to push, trying to claw their way back into the game, but the Lakers were able to score a pair in the fourth to hold on for the victory.
