Women take seven of nine sports in the giant slalom

TAYLOR FALLS, Minn. — The NMU alpine ski team had a dominant season-opening competition, as both teams claimed gold in the giant slalom.

The Wildcats opened the season at USCSA Wild Mountain, competing in the giant slalom before competing in the slalom tomorrow. Athletes ski two runs, and their combined timed total from the two runs determines where they place among the field.

The women posted a combined time of 2:40.31, thanks to a podium sweep from Tommie Springer (52.50), Ashley Schaffer (53.85), and Onalee Wallis (53.96). Madalyn Stern (54.04) finished fourth, and NMU claimed seven of the top nine spots.

The men posted a combined time of 2:29.54, thanks to silver and bronze from Reed Heathman (49.76) and Noah Bindas (49.77), and a fourth-place finish from Kyan Hopke (50.01). Anthony Petkov (50.20) and Cashton Jaeger (50.61) finished fifth and sixth, and NMU claimed seven of the top 10 times.

The ‘Cats now complete the weekend with the slalom tomorrow, competing in the same format as today. Individual and team results for both the women and men can be found below.
