MARQUETTE COUNTY, Mich. (WZMQ) – The winter storm that hit the Upper Peninsula this week has caused extensive power outages, particularly in Marquette County. Local organizations have opened their buildings to serve as warming centers for those without power.

The Chocolay Township Hall Meeting Room opened to the public on Tuesday morning. The hall is located at 5010 US-41 South.

Also on Tuesday, Messiah Evangelical Lutheran Church on West Magnetic Street announced that it would be open until 7 p.m. on Tuesday and from 8:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Animals are welcome if they are on a leash and do not present a danger to others.

LoveMarq Church on 728 West Kaye Avenue opened as a warming center on Monday. The church reported that a few people stayed overnight. The church is offering coffee, bottled water, and snacks. For more information, call (906) 869-4548.

Those in need of warmth can also visit the Peter White Public Library, Marquette City Hall, Skandia Township Hall, and the KBIC Harvey Casino during operating hours. The Sands Township Complex is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday.

The American Red Cross has established overnight shelters. At the Chocolay Township Fire Hall, located at 2010 US-41, no pets are allowed. Guests are asked to bring linens and medications. Limited showers are available, but visitors are asked to bring towels and toiletries. Marquette’s City Hall at 300 West Baraga Avenue is also open as an overnight shelter, but no pets are allowed.

WZMQ 19 will update this article if more establishments open their doors to the community.
