Caltagirone, Keane, Bassino lead Wildcat attack
NAPERVILLE, Ill. – Three members of the Northern Michigan women’s wrestling team placed third in their respective weight classes to highlight a seventh-place team finish at the North Central College Invitational on Sunday.
Competing in a field of more than 30 teams, the Wildcats totaled 49.5 points on the day. Alissa Caltagirone (145), Alyssa Keane (138), and Sophia Bassino (160) each battled through their bracket to claim third-place finishes and anchor the Green and Gold’s performance.
Caltagirone posted a 4-2 record at 145 pounds, advancing to the placement rounds after multiple strong wins earlier in the day. She closed the tournament in convincing fashion, earning a 10-2 decision victory in the third-place bout to secure a spot on the podium.
Keane turned in a dominant performance of the day at 138B, winning four of her five matches. Three of her victories came by tech fall, including an emphatic 10-0 result in just 2:26 during the third-place match to cap her day.
Bassino also went 4-1 at 160 pounds. In her third-place match, she prevailed in a tightly contested bout, earning an 11-11 decision win to finish the tournament on a high note.
Abbie Miles added points for Northern at 180 pounds, picking up two wins to place sixth. Zhivanna Magdaleno recorded a pair of victories at 117, while Clarissa Wangen collected a win of her own at 180.
In total, the Wildcats went 17-15 across 32 matches.
Host North Central claimed the team title with 139 points, followed by Iowa and Providence, which tied for second with 76.5 points apiece.
