Escanaba holiday shopping starts early with Black Friday on Tuesday

ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – Downtown Escanaba has officially kicked off the holiday shopping season.

Black Friday on Tuesday encourages shoppers to hunt for their Christmas gifts at small businesses. They are also welcome to stop at local restaurants for lunch and dinner.

Most of the shops on Ludington Street are open later than usual, offering sales, specials, and prize drawings. Until 8 p.m., the Canterbury Book Store is running its annual mystery book sale.

“Now, these aren’t mysteries like the genre of mysteries,” co-owner and manager Jesse Traub explained. “Rather, they are an unknown book wrapped in paper that we sell for a dollar. I guarantee, none of these books are good. However, they can make a hilarious addition to a stocking stuffer.”

Traub says Black Friday on Tuesday has become one of the best shopping days of the year for the Canterbury Book Store.

“It’s just kind of magical to have all these people out at the same time out in downtown,” he said. “It never feels as alive as it does on these nights. I know a lot of the businesses down here really appreciate all the support people give them, so just keep on doing that. We really appreciate when people choose to buy from a local store here.”

Black Friday on Tuesday leads to the annual Center Court tree lighting in the evening. The event starts at 6 p.m. with music by the Escanaba City Band and an appearance by Santa Claus, followed by a countdown to the tree lighting at 7 p.m.
