NMU wins three of its last five games
MARQUETTE, Mich. – Northern Michigan football closed its season with a historic performance on the field – and the recognition followed. The Wildcats swept the GLIAC’s weekly honors, with running back Noah Dobert named Offensive Player of the Week, defensive back Jeremiah Gossett earning Defensive Player of the Week, and kicker Michael Karlen claiming Special Teams Player of the Week.
It marks the first time in recent program history that NMU has swept all three major conference honors in a single week.
Dobert earns third GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week honor
Redshirt freshman running back Noah Dobert earned the GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week for the third time this season, following one of the most dominant rushing performances in NCAA Division II history.
Dobert erupted for 406 yards and four touchdowns on 32 carries in NMU’s 45-11 win over Wayne State, breaking the program’s single-game rushing record previously held by Mark Bossuah (317, 2007). His performance stands as the best single-game rushing total in Division II this season and ranks among the top five all-time.
The record-breaking day also pushed Dobert past two major single-season program records – rushing yards (1,656) and rushing touchdowns (15) – both previously held by All-American Jake Mayon from 2018.
Dobert closed the season:
– 3rd in NCAA DII in rushing yards (1,656)
– 3rd in rushing yards per game (150.5)
– 263 carries | 6.3 yards per carry | 15 TDs
He ripped touchdown runs of 56, 52, 64, and 72 yards, averaging 12.7 yards per attempt. He finished just 19 yards shy of the NCAA DII single-game rushing record.
His dominance helped NMU set a new team single-season rushing record of 3,123 yards, shattering the previous mark of 2,660 (2018).
Gossett named GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week
In the same game, senior defensive back Jeremiah Gossett delivered his best performance in a Wildcat uniform to earn GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week honors.
Gossett recorded two interceptions, including one late in the first half to deny a Wayne State scoring chance. He added another in the second half to help seal the victory.
The Senior Day effort closed out a strong NMU career that included:
– 10 pass breakups
– 2 interceptions
– 2 fumble recoveries
Karlen claims GLIAC Special Teams Player of the Week
Senior kicker Michael Karlen capped off his NMU career with a flawless final performance, earning GLIAC Special Teams Player of the Week.
Karlen went 6-for-6 on PAT attempts against Wayne State, finishing his career 58-for-59 on extra points. He also drilled a 41-yard field goal, giving him nine points in the season finale.
Karlen wrapped up his final season:
– 21-for-21 on PATs
– 5-for-7 on field goals
