Kingaford’s Madelynn Kreider had 41 assists, 13 digs for Huskies
HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech volleyball team fell 3-1 to Wayne State on Friday at the SDC Gym. The Warriors took the match 25-14, 25-20, 16-25, and 25-16.
“We had a very slow start but were able to play with determination and will to win from set 2 on,” Tech coach Cindy Pindral said. “When we executed the game plan, we were on fire, so we need to trust ourselves for a longer period of time to see more results. I’m proud of our freshmen and sophomores in particular for having an impactful match. We are turning our attention ahead and moving on.”
Down 2-0 at the break, the Huskies played inspired in the third. They used a 6-1 run early in the frame to take a five-point lead. The Warriors cut the lead down to two points before the Huskies closed on an 8-3 rally to win the third 25-16. Rachel Zurek and Tricia Kennedy each had four kills in the third.
WSU (15-4, 7-2 GLIAC) jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the fourth and didn’t look back to win its fifth straight GLIAC match.
The Warriors won 25-14 in the opening set. Four different Huskies had a pair of kills each but couldn’t overcome the Warriors’ .306 attack.
Brooke Dzwik had four kills in the second to keep the set close, but the visitors hit .320 to build a 2-0 lead at the break, 25-20.
Rachel Zurek led the Huskies with 12 kills. Brooke Dzwik was also in double figures with 10 kills and added six digs. Madelynn Kreider set the attack with 41 assists and added 13 digs. Julia Fledderjohn led with 16 digs, and Amelia Albers added a season-high 11 digs.
Tech (7-12, 4-4 GLIAC) wraps up the weekend at 2 p.m. on Saturday against Grand Valley State. The Lakers fell 3-2 at Northern Michigan on Friday.
