MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Halloween is a time for spooky fun. Kids of all ages will be dressing up in their favorite costumes and setting out on foot to find all the Halloween goodies.
But remember, having fun also means keeping safety in mind. Captain Jim Finkbeiner of the Marquette City Police Department has some tips for parents, motorists and kids, on how to remain safe this Halloween.
“Wait to cross the street, to look both ways before you cross the street. Only cross when you know it’s safe, use crosswalks at corners. Do not cross in between, in the middle of the block,” said Captain Finkbeiner.
With it getting dark earlier, drivers are asked to be extra vigilant. Look out for people in costumes crossing the street. Turn your lights on and most importantly…
“Please slow down and watch for kids. I mean, there will be a lot of kids with parents and that type of thing and in groups, you just never know when kids may jump out between cars or cross without looking,” said Captain Finkbeiner.
Parents should make sure their kids know how to be safe while trick or treating, be aware of things like proper fitting costumes that don’t impair vision and being aware of your surroundings.
“Don’t ever enter somebody’s house that’s giving candy. Don’t walk up to anybody in a vehicle when you’re out in the neighborhoods that might be handing out candy, and stick together. Don’t go to dark houses. Don’t go to places by yourself. And once again, one of the biggest things is especially with young kids. Make sure that you have parents that escorting the kids during those times,” reminded Finkbeiner.
As a reminder, The Marquette Downtown Development Association will hold its annual trick or treating event tomorrow afternoon from 4 till 7pm.
