MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – The NMU Cosmetology Department teamed up with the Wellbeing Center on Wednesday to bring a day of special self-care opportunities to campus.
The second annual Treat Yourself Day was offered to students and community members at its Northern Center studio, aiming to bring awareness to mental health by providing free treatments throughout the day, including manicures, pedicures, facials, and haircuts.
“We want people to feel confident in who they are, and sometimes getting services done can help people with that confidence,” said Sofia Hernandez, a first year cosmetology student. “Especially when people don’t have the money, it could be the public or for students maybe going through some hard times.”
Participants also had the chance to enter their names for raffle prizes and gift baskets, as well as purchase goods from the departments bake sale. Wednesday’s outcome was well met with the community, also providing a great experience for all students in the two year program.
“The phone was ringing off the hook yesterday and the day before, we pretty much booked our schedule,” said Cosmetology and Aesthetics Instructor, Michelle Whitaker. “We’re happy to do these services, it gives our students great experience.”
The NMU Cosmetology Department also reminds the community about its Veterans Day treatments on November 11, offering free self-care to veterans who visit the facility. Its Toys for Tots donation program is also ongoing into December, where toy donations can be met with a free haircut.
