MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – As the leaves begin to change, our thoughts turn to ghost stories and all things Halloween. And keeping with that theme, the Marquette Maritime Museum is gearing up for its biggest fundraiser of the year, the “Ghosts of Lighthouse Point”.
“We have tours that leave every 10 minutes from the museum parking lot, and they go all around Lighthouse Park, up through the lighthouse back to the museum, and they are visited by ghosts of real characters from Marquette’s past,” said Museum Director Hilary Billman.
The ancient lighthouse has kept watch over Marquette harbor since 1866 in that time, the structure and the surrounding grounds have been home to a cast of characters, many of whom are represented during the ghostly tour.
“We have a ship’s surgery. We have ghosts from the shipwreck the Bannockburn and a couple of our resident lighthouse ghosts that we have every year are going to be back,” said Billman.
Lighthouse Point has undergone many renovations and additions over the years, with much of its rich history being retold by volunteer actors who give voice to the spirits of the past.
“As you’re going on this spooky tour, you’re also going to learn a little bit about this lighthouse that was built in 1866 and all about the Coast Guard property that was all around it and some of the shipwrecks that happened in the area and around the Great Lakes,” said Billman.
All the proceeds from the ghost tours benefit the Maritime Museum and its programming, which continues year round.
“So our maritime history on tap lecture series starts November 4, and that is going to be all about the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald and the 50th anniversary so that’s going to be at the Ore Dock Brewing Company, maritime history on tap is the first Tuesday of the month, November through April.
