Davenport kicks its way past MTU Women’s Soccer

Vasoni scores for Huskies

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech women’s soccer team scored first, but ultimately fell shy of victory, falling 3-1 to Davenport at Kearly Stadium on Friday Night.

“We came out and scored a scrappy goal, which was nice and then got away from our game plan and what we were looking to do,” said head coach Melissa Kuhar. “Davenport was looking for their first win of the season and we knew they were going to come out hard–we didn’t create enough in the run of play and we didn’t capitalize on the free kicks that we got.”

Bella Vasoli got Michigan Tech (1-5-1, 1-1-1 GLIAC) on the board in the 17th minute, crashing the net hard following a free kick from Olivia Gette just past midfield to give Michigan Tech a 1-0 advantage and Vasoli her first goal of the season.

From there, Davenport (1-3-2, 1-1-0 GLIAC) took the momentum and tied the contest 1-1 four minutes later with a goal from Sofia Capoccia off a similarly placed free kick of the Huskies minutes earlier, as Capoccia found an empty net deep in the Huskies’ territory for a chip-in.

Six minutes later, the Panthers pulled ahead with a goal from Jordan Kerns, finding the top left corner of the net after a couple passes, giving the away team a 2-1 lead heading into halftime.

For the third-straight game, Coach Kuhar elected for a goalkeeper change at halftime, with Ludesha Reynolds taking to the net for five saves in the second half as Bri Barrows made three stops in the opening 45 minutes.

Davenport earned a two-goal cushion in the 68th minute off a corner kick, with chaos in front of the net resulting in a goal by Ella Chatfield.

The physical contest showed two yellow cards from each team and Davenport accrued 19 fouls compared to just five for the Huskies. The Panthers produced nine shots in each half and held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Gette led the Huskies with five shots and one on goal, while Josie Wilcox posted four shots and two on goal to lead the Panthers.

Elizabeth Wolter made one save while allowing one goal in the net for Davenport.

Up Next

The Huskies are back in action at Kearly Stadium on Sunday, hosting No. 3 nationally-ranked Grand Valley State, with a scheduled start time of noon.
