Gladstone National Honor Society holds annual 9/11 Van Cleve Park cleanup

GLADSTONE, Mich. (WZMQ) – In remembrance of the events of 9/11, a group of Delta County students and teachers made a difference in their community.

On Thursday, the Gladstone High School National Honor Society picked up litter in Van Cleve Park. This was the group’s third year cleaning the park on September 11.

“It’s a way for us to serve our community and also have sort of a memorial with it too,” said senior Peyton Rohr.

Even though Rohr and her fellow students were born after 2001, they say they understand the significance of 9/11. According to Rohr they want to do their part to bring the country together.

“My grandparents, my aunts, my older siblings, my parents—they were all there, and I’ve heard stories and I’ve seen videos, of course,” she said. “I know it was a really tragic day. To me, this day is showing that we are still one country; we’re not divided. I think that’s an important factor in everything, just to come together to be one and to remember the events that have happened and how they’ve made us as a country stronger.”

The Gladstone National Honor Society is involved in other community outreach projects throughout the year. They regularly read to younger students in the school district and visit senior citizens at Lakeview Assisted Living. They also repainted the local skate park this summer.
