ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Delta County Cancer Alliance is gearing up for its second annual Pink Fest in October.
On the first three Thursdays of the month, local bars will hold pink-themed gatherings. Attendees will enjoy specialty drinks, receive educational materials, and participate in the Bras for a Cause contest.
Right now, bras are available to purchase for $75. Individuals, businesses, and organizations that purchase a bra will decorate theirs with a unique theme. The decorated bras will be on display at each Pink Fest event, where attendees will pay to vote for their favorites.
“Last year, I was amazed at the creativity and the artistic abilities,” said Delta County Cancer Alliance President Gayle DeShambo. “They were absolutely beautiful, and people had so much fun. I think that’s the difference that this fundraiser made is it was fun.”
The first Pink Fest event will take place at Chenier’s Reef on October 2, the second will be held at the Rapid River Pub on October 9, and the third will take place at Cat-Man-Do’s on October 16. New this year, Pink Fest will wrap up with an auction on October 23 at the Highland Golf Club, where supporters will be able to bid on their favorite bras.
All proceeds will go to the Delta County Cancer Alliance. The Cancer Alliance provides financial support, mobility aids, nutritional aids, wigs, personal items, and other resources for area residents facing a cancer diagnosis.
“We have new clients coming in every single day, so [Pink Fest] was an amazing support,” DeShambo said. “We are all volunteers. We are a nonprofit organization. We take all this money and put it to help our loved ones in need at a very difficult time.”
Bras are available to purchase at the Daily Press, located at 600 Ludington Street, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Decorated bra submissions are due back at the Daily Press by September 26.
