Marquette County looks to update Community Wildfire Protection Plan

by Andrew Hansz
August 11, 2025 - Updated on August 12, 2025

CHAMPION, Mich. (WZMQ) – As the risk of wildfires are always changing, Marquette County is in its process of updating the Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP).

On Monday, the first of two input meetings was held at Jerzi’s Sports Bar, with the plan to gather feedback on concerns, as well as pinpoint heightened wildfire risks and resources available to the community.

As the county is currently under the set plan from 2014, adding this input and updating the plan is crucial to the safety of its residents. The overall goal is to obtain the federal funding needed to put these mitigations into place.

“We’re trying to get a community perspective, an understanding, of where homeowners and other members of the community feel there are risks that might not be currently included,” said Marquette County Climate Adaptation Coordinator, Nicolaas Vermaat. “And, also engage with fire departments to understand resource needs, personnel needs, anything else that should be included in the plan.”

The next CWPP meeting will be held on Tuesday, August 12, at 7 p.m., in the U.P.A.W.S. community room, at 815 S State Highway 553, Gwinn.
