CALUMET, Mich. (WZMQ) – State Representative Greg Markkanen (R-110th District) has received a lifetime achievement award for his commitment to the Keweenaw’s tourism industry.
Visit Keweenaw has named Markkanen this year’s Tourism Champion. According to Executive Director Brad Barnett, Visit Keweenaw has worked with Markkanen on several initiatives. He says Markkanen was particularly instrumental in the reopening of the Lake Linden-Hubbel ORV and Snowmobile Trail after the 2018 Father’s Day Flood.
Barnett believes Markkanen has gone “above and beyond” to help the area succeed.
“He’s always been someone who we can pick up the phone and call, and he gets right back to us,” Barnett said. “We’ve heard a lot from area businesses in the Keweenaw about how supportive he has been to them. Certainly, he’s been an advocate and a champion for the visitor economy here in the Keweenaw, so we’re very happy to give him this award.”
Barnett also applauds Markkanen for his legislative efforts, like his work on the minimum wage tip credit. He says the representative has shown dedication to supporting outdoor recreation, small businesses, and public policy that boosts the region’s tourism economy.
“The visitor economy is something that touches all elements of the Keweenaw community, so it takes a lot of incredible partnerships in order for it to succeed,” said Barnett. “We appreciate all the support that we get from individuals across our region to help keep this rolling.”
Visit Keweenaw believes Representative Markkanen’s leadership helps the Keweenaw remain a vibrant destination for both tourists and residents.
