MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – The southern gateway to the city of Marquette just got a little brighter, as hundreds of flowers are in the process of being planted along south front street.

Petunia pandemonium is in full swing with 240 Bothwell Middle School students spreading out along the busy thoroughfare to plant flowers to beautify the corridor. Put on by the Marquette beautification and restoration committee, the event, in its 38th year, attracts over 400 volunteers and costs around $35,000 per year. Pandemonium coordinator, Barb Kelly, says the flowers make a nice first impression to those entering the city from the south.

“I do think it creates a lot of community pride and shows them by a simple act of planting a small plant that you can create something beautiful that lasts for five months and makes a lot of people really happy when they drive through here,” said Kelly.

Tomorrow is the big day when the public is invited to come out and plant flowers. Those interested should meet at the McCabe’s carpet store parking lot at 11 am Saturday morning.
