Gladstone American Legion remembers lost service members on Memorial Day

GLADSTONE, Mich. (WZMQ) – In observance of Memorial Day, Gladstone area residents gathered at Fernwood Cemetery, where more than 800 local veterans are buried.

American Legion Post 71 held its annual ceremony Monday morning. Local scouts raised the American flag, then lowered it to half-staff. The Gladstone High School Band performed several songs and played “Taps.”

The American Legion detailed Memorial Day’s origin following the Civil War and how veterans of all subsequent wars have joined the ranks as recipients of their country’s honor.

Post 71 Chaplain Joseph Hilton says the Memorial Day ceremony is an important tradition. He believes getting young people involved ensures the community will always remember the sacrifices its veterans made.

“I believe that it really brings the community closer together on this day to honor them,” Hilton said. “To have the high school band do some of the patriotic songs, it actually allows the younger kids to know exactly what Memorial Day means.”

Afterward, Post 71 placed a wreath on the water at the Gladstone Yacht Club in memory of those who served in the Navy.
