2025 Michigan Veterans Leadership Summit held at NMU

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency (MVAA) has brought the 2025 Michigan Veterans Leadership Summit to the Northern Center, offering a hand to U.P. veterans, as well as others throughout the state.

Each year, the summit welcomes veterans of all branches together to guide them through their available resources. The two day event brings networking opportunities for veterans to discuss challenges and outcomes, as well as numerous panels throughout the day, presenting on things like education, employment, and health benefits for those who have served.

“It’s mostly educational on the current programs, initiatives, and programs offered in the state,” said Lexis Jones, the strategic outreach director for the MVAA.

Rounding out day one was the celebration of two veterans of the year.

Mike ‘Flagman’ Bowen was recognized for his years of dedication towards those missing in action, running a mile for each soldier who has paid the ultimate sacrifice. Over the last 43 years, he has ran almost 80,000 miles, all with a POW/MIA flag in hand. For his story, visit Michigan.gov/MVAA.

Also recognized was Jim Provost, who has worked with Marquette County Department of Veterans Affairs for over 20 years, aiming to help as many veterans as he can, while helping himself as well.

“Anytime I can talk to anybody and help one veteran, that’s what it’s all about,” said Provost. “It’s what I like to do, it helps me too.”

The MVAA suggests to check in on loved ones or friends who have served, making sure they are aware of the many resources available to them.

To view these resources, visit Michigan.gov/MVAA, or call 1-800-MICH-VET (1-800-642-4838) with any questions.
