Manistique High School students explore potential natural resources careers

MANISTIQUE, Mich. (WZMQ) – On Tuesday, the Schoolcraft Conservation District introduced Manistique High School students to potential careers in natural resources.

Environmental science students spoke with Conservation District staff, Forest Service employees, and National Parks workers about jobs they can pursue after school.

“We’re trying to get them to maybe be exposed to opportunities that they might not have thought of before and talking to them about what a day-to-day job looks like in this industry,” said Sara Solberg, Communications Coordinator for the Schoolcraft Conservation District.

Solberg says there is currently a great need for new people to enter these fields.

“There’s obviously a lot of challenges that we’re facing right now in terms of our natural resources globally, but also at a more local level with things like aquatic invasive species or different pests and pathogens that are affecting trees,” she said. “Those local issues I think are just as important, and we need people to be working on that.”

According to Solberg, people with a range of educational backgrounds can find fulfilling careers in environmental services.

“My position [with the Conservation District] is doing a lot of outreach and trying to educate and inform people,” said Solberg, who studied writing. “I think an important avenue to talk with people coming into this career about is the intersectionality and how a background in writing can maybe be applied to natural resources preservation.”
