Blizzard leads to closed doors in Marquette

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – On Wednesday, due to blizzard conditions, some businesses in Marquette either had to close their doors or operate on irregular business hours. Places like BabyCakes were able to hold their all on Wednesday, before the outstanding amount of snow became a concern.

“We opened up like normal, but when we noticed it was starting to get bad, we closed early at one,” said Kendal Persails, a barista at BabyCakes. With better conditions today, the shop was able to open on a bit later than usual, to make sure staff could come in safely.

“Today, myself and another barista had asked our manager if it was okay if we closed or opened a little early, and we accommodated by opening from nine to five.” said Persails. Other places such as Trenary Toast and Blossom Bird Bubble Tea had to completely close their doors early Wednesday morning, as employees and management were unable to travel in the harsh conditions.

“Yesterday was crazy, we ended up deciding to close in the morning to keep our employees safe,” said Elizabeth Thill, the general manager at Trenary Toast. The cafe also opened two hours later than normal on Thursday, to make sure employees could have time to get to work. On Tuesday night, Blossom Bird employees preparing Wednesday’s baked goods were unsure if they would even be open to sell them the next day.

“Tuesday night I was baking as the storm started to roll in,” said Ruby Olson, a baker at Blossom Bird Bubble Tea, “then on Wednesday we ended up being completely closed.” Customers returned to the boba shop on Thursday, as the weather was lighter than the last two days.

Leading into the weekend, the businesses will adjust back to their normal schedules.
