HOUGHTON, Mich. (WZMQ) – Michigan Technological University has eliminated a previously-offered diversity scholarship.
On February 21, the Michigan Tech Board of Trustees voted to retire the Diversity Incentive Award, a scholarship with a minimum value of $1,000 and a maximum of full tuition plus fees. The award was available to “U.S. citizens and members of the under-represented groups.”
According to Vice President for University Relations and Enrollment John Lehman, the decision to retire the award makes Michigan Tech “congruent” with recent federal policies and state law.
“In 2006, the voters of the state of Michigan passed ballot proposal 2, which restricted the ability of public universities from offering financial aid based on race, gender, or national origin,” Lehman stated during the meeting. “Since that time, the Diversity Incentive Award has seen very little utility amongst financial aid staff.”
Michigan Tech administrators were not available to comment further at the time of this article.
