MARQUETTE, Mich. – It was an exciting day at Vandament Arena on Sunday afternoon, as the Northern Michigan women’s wrestling team defeated the UW-Oshkosh Titans 30-17 for its fourth dual win of the season.
The duals began at 180 as Mickaela Keane got the victory by fall at 2:26. Keane controlled the match, adding two points to her score four times to lead 8-0 before adding the exclamation point with a win by fall to give NMU a 5-0 team lead.
Next up was the bout at 207, with NMU’s Kailyn Garrett adding a four-point takedown in the first seconds that was followed with back-and-forth action as Garrett trailed 7-6 after the first period. Just 30 seconds into the second, Garrett quickly finished off the match with a win by fall. Northern led 10-0.
UW-Oshkosh then added two wins by forfeit at 103 and 110 to even the score at 10’s.
In the final matchup before intermission, Yu Sakamoto proved her title of World Champion by making quick work of her opponent, winning by tech fall in 1:17 to push the ‘Cats ahead 14-10.
Out of intermission, Sara Schroder fell to Mya Delleree by tech fall at 3:30 to even the score at 14-14 heading into the final bout.
At 131, Sharon Leon trailed 2-0, but quickly turned the tides with a monster takedown to lead 6-4 after the first period. After a quick reset, the teeter-totter action continued. With an 8-8 tie in the final seconds, UW-Oshkosh’s Annesley Day won by decision 10-8. The score was 17-15 in favor of the Titans.
Northern ended the duals with a trio of victories by forfeit, with Sam Chaon (138), Alissa Caltagirone (145), and Sophia Bassino (160) getting the wins for the Green and Gold to make the final score 30-17.
A pair of exhibitions ended the duals. At 117, Trinity Valentine fell to Paige Haaf by fall at 2:43 and at 160, NMU’s Bassino won by fall at 1:22.
