NMU women wrestlers double up Alma

Wildcats back on the road Sunday

MARQUETTE, Mich. – In its first action in the 2025 calendar year, the Northern Michigan women’s wrestling team defeated Alma College 32-16 in duals at the Dome on Saturday afternoon. Northern is now 3-3 in duals this season with a pair of wins over Alma.

The day started in the bout at 160, with Sophia Bassino winning by fall at 4:02 to give Northern a 5-0 lead. Bassino recorded two points and four points in the first round and followed it with the same sequence early in the second round for the win.

Four forfeits followed, with Mickaela Keane (180) and Ozioma Ogu (207) winning for the Wildcats, while Paige VanSetters (103) and Caroline Farris (110) grabbing wins for the Scots.

NMU led 15-10 returning to action at 117. NMU’s Sara Schroder made quick work of her opponent, winning by tech fall 10-0 at 1:22 for four points and a 19-10 lead for the Green and Gold. While in full control, Schroder rolled over her opponent several times, rapidly adding two points to her score on repeat until the victory was secured.

Zhivanna Magdaleno took the mat next in the battle at 124. Facing a 4-0 deficit, Magdaleno quickly turned things around, adding two points, followed by another two, and then a four-point move to win by fall at 2:02. NMU led 24-10.

At 131, Sharon Leon also used a maneuver to roll over her opponent in rapid succession to pick up a 10-0 tech fall victory in 1:30. The Wildcats were now ahead 28-10.

Carly Cowles recorded a win for Alma at 138, defeating Priscilla Hartwell by fall at 0:56 to make the score 28-15 heading to the final match.

A full bout was played at 145, with Alissa Caltagirone winning by tech fall 14-3 in the full six minutes. Caltagirone led 6-0 after the first round and added four points on a throw in the final seconds to wrap-up the tech fall win.

Northern won the duals, 32-16.

In exhibition action, Ruby Joseph won by decision 5-1 at 160 and Sara Schroder added another win at 117, this time by tech fall at 1:17.

It’s a quick turnaround for NMU as the Wildcats are on the road to take part in the Lakeland Scramble in Plymouth, Wisconsin on Sunday, January 12.
