ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – A potential update to the mural at the Delta County Airport has been put on hold while administrators search for a new manager.

The existing mural was painted in 2000 by artist James Finlan. In October, Escanaba business owner Kylie Kalishek proposed an update to the Airport Advisory Board.

Kalishek’s family has an extensive history in aviation. Her desire is to see that history preserved in the local airport. Photographs and news articles detailing her family’s legacy can currently be seen at her storefront, Blading Boutique & Small Business Emporium.

In November, Kalishek, Finlan, and Airport Manager Robert Ranstadler met to move the project forward, looking into potential display options, new artwork, and logistical issues that would need to be addressed. However, Ranstadler submitted his resignation on December 3.

Now, airport management since decided to shelve the project at this time.

“In light of the ongoing leadership transition taking place at Delta County Airport, it is with deep regret that airport management must postpone future planning with Ms. Kalishek, Mr. Finlan, and other stakeholders associated with the Airport Mural update,” airport management told WZMQ 19. “We understand that this is an important initiative and will resume working with our valued partners following the hiring of new management team. In the meantime, we wish everyone involved with the project, as well as all of Delta County, Happy Holidays and a prosperous New Year.”

Kalishek says while she is discouraged that the project won’t be moving forward at its previous pace, she is not surprised by the decision.

“More than being disappointed about the mural, I’m disappointed that Delta County is losing a really good airport manager,” she said. “He was making a big difference, and this is a huge loss to the County. I know that there’s going to be a shift in priorities replacing this airport manager, but I hope that future management will be able to pick up where he left off. He was doing a really good thing, preserving this history.”
