MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Northern Michigan University Student Athletic Advisory Committee and The Mining Journal Cheer Club held a teddy bear toss during the NMU / Ferris State Hockey game Friday evening. Spectators were asked to bring in a stuffed animal to donate to less fortunate children this holiday season. a cascade of toys was tossed onto the ice where they were collected, sorted, and donated to St.Vincent DePaul and the Salvation Army for distribution to area boys and girls. Salvation Army board member Jim Reevs says these donated teddy bears might be some child’s only gift this Christmas.

“Keep in mind the people who get these Teddy Bears, the kids may not have had anything without the help of the Salvation Army or St. Vincent DePaul they may not have had at Christmas. so you can imagine the impact that has on these kids,” said Reevs. “Can you imagine the kid getting this and the smile that’s going to come on their face?”

Saturday Night when the Wildcats take on Ferris State in game two of the series, fans are asked to bring in new, unwrapped socks and toss them onto the ice during the first intermission. The socks will be given to several local charities including Beacon House and the Woman’s Center.
