Kingsley Perkins paces LSSU with 20 points

CHICAGO, Ill. – The No. 10 Lake Superior State (LSSU) men’s basketball team (8-2, 1-1 GLIAC) proved to be the superior Lakers with a 79-77 win at Roosevelt (2-5, 0-1 GLIAC) on Thursday.

Tyson Edmondson (Ypsilanti, Mich.) opened up the scoring with a three on LSSU’s opening possession. Devin Womack (Ypsilanti, Mich.) would then hit a three from the corner to keep his team ahead, but Roosevelt fought back to take a one point lead at 9-8. Lake State was able to push back ahead, building momentum with a dunk from Adam Harakow (Edmonton, Alta.) and multiple threes from Drew Hess (Oscoda, Mich.). LSSU continued to battle, using a 7-0 run that featured a dunk from Edmondson and an and one from Harakow to go ahead 41-27, their largest lead of the night, and they would go into the half leading 46-35.

Roosevelt started the second half strong, opening the frame with an 11-2 run to trim the deficit to two. LSSU was able to nurse their slim lead with a bucket inside from Kingsley Perkins (Ypsilanti, Mich.) and a clutch three from Hess, but RU just kept hanging around. Then, with just under eight minutes to play, a Roosevelt three put them ahead for the first time since the score was 9-8. Both teams began to trade buckets for the next five minutes of game time, but with three minutes to go, Andy Soma (Traverse City, Mich.) fired from the corner to put Lake State back in front. A three from Womack and a hook shot inside from Perkins helped hold off RU before icing the game away at the free throw line.

Perkins led the way offensively with 20 points while Womack was not far behind with 17 of his own. Edmondson also finished scoring in double-figures with 11 points.

The Lakers return to action on Dec. 22 when they host Kuyper in Bud Cooper Gymnasium with tipoff scheduled for 1 p.m.
