Works scores only Huskies’ goal

HOUGHTON, Mich. – No. 20 Michigan Tech fell 3-1 to No. 17 Minnesota State on Saturday at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena. The Huskies drop to 6-4-0 overall and 4-2-0 in the CCHA.

“We put in a good effort tonight and stuck together. We were much better tonight,” Tech coach Joe Shawhan said. “I think we played good enough to win but their skilled individual players made some plays when they needed to.”

Jack Works opened the game’s scoring 5:17 into the second period when he jammed in his second of the season from Rylan Brown and Marcus Pedersen. Works skated in his 99th career NCAA game on Saturday and now has 20 career goals.

MSU (10-4-2, 5-1-2 CCHA) tied it up at 10:38 of the second with a shorthanded goal from Zach Krajnik. It was the second shorty of the weekend for the Mavericks.

Ralfs Bergmanis scored the eventual game-winner at 12:33 with a long shot through traffic from Adam Eisele.

Adam Eisele then made a two-goal lead for the visitors 36 seconds later.

Tech pulled its goaltender late in the third period and had a shot hit the post but couldn’t find the back of the net.

Shots favored the Huskies 33-18. Derek Mullahy made 15 saves for Tech, and Alex Tracy stopped 32 shots for MSU.

For the second night in a row, the teams combined for 10 penalties. Tech was 3-for-3 on the penalty kill and 0-for-7 on the man advantage.

The Huskies travel to Bowling Green next weekend for their only series of the season against the Falcons.
