MTU Women’s Soccer scoring struggles continue

Huskies fall to Davenport 1-0

CALEDONIA, Mich. – The Michigan Tech soccer team opened the second half of the conference slate falling 1-0 to Davenport at the Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex on Friday afternoon.

“It was another tough loss for our group. It isn’t a lack of effort, chances, or talent. We just need to find a way to put the ball in the back of the net,” Tech soccer coach Melissa Kuhar said. “We move forward and will work to get a win on Sunday.”

Michigan Tech (4-7, 2-6 GLIAC) held a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks in an opening period that showcased three total shots, with Grace Hoeppner accruing the shot for the Black & Gold. Davenport’s (5-3-4, 3-2-3 GLIAC) leading goal scorer Haley Diekevers had the lone scoring chance of the first half less than three minutes into the contest.

Defender Clara Murchison in the second start of her career, made vital stops for MTU with a blocked shot and a takeaway from Diekevers in the first half.

The offensive output ramped up in the second 45 minutes of action, seeing the Panthers outshot the Huskies 9-7 with Tech goalkeeper Bri Barrows making three saves in the period.

Veteran Kiersen Korienek had a golden opportunity to bury a shot from deep within the six in the 62nd minute but the shot went high and over the net.

Davenport, a team who’s shockingly only scored in the second half so far this season, found the back of the net in the 71st minute as Taylor Meadows navigated a chaotic box and found a loss ball for a clear shot at the net after a failed clear by the Huskies to take a 1-0 lead with less than 20 minutes to go in regulation.

Sophomore Brooke Green took the final shot for the Huskies, forcing Wolter to make a save with 10 minutes to play, ultimately seeing Davenport tie the season series at 1-1, earning the 1-0 victory.

Brooke Green and Jordan Noble tallied the lone two shots on goal for Michigan Tech while junior goalkeeper Bri Barrows recorded four saves.

Haley Diekevers paced the Panthers offense with a team-high four shots, with two on goal. Freshman goalkeeper Elizabeth Wolter made two saves on her way to her fifth shutout.
