MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Marquette Mountain Resort is taking leaf-peeping to new heights.
Along with its annual fall colors chairlift rides, the resort is hosting its inaugural Cheese Roll on Saturday, Oct. 19. It’s based on the unique tradition in England where people chase a wheel of cheese down a hillside to be the first to cross the finish line– and, hopefully, not get injured in the process!
“I don’t know if anybody in the US does it,” said general manager Kaet Johnson. “We just thought we’d do a cheese roll, and we partnered with Everyday Wines in Marquette and they’re supplying the prize, which is a cheese roll– a roll of cheese that’s $300! And the first one down the first one to catch the cheese or the first one down wins.”
Online registration ends Oct. 18 at 4 p.m.
The ski hill is also offering chairlift rides to view the fall colors, which are currently at peak in Marquette.
“I think it’s magic,” said Holly Tyler, Marquette Mountain’s Guest Services coordinator. “The colors are just everywhere around us. It’s a beautiful time to be at Marquette Mountain.”
“First timers are really surprised about the views we have here at the top. You can see Lake Superior east and west and north. It’s just gorgeous,” Johnson added.
Lifts are available Saturday, Oct. 19 from noon to 4 p.m. Click here for more details.
