MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – No one was seriously injured after a crash and subsequent car fire in northern Marquette County Wednesday night.

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office says around 7 p.m., a deputy on patrol came across a vehicle that had crashed into a power pole on the west side of county Road 550, near the south parking lot of Sugarloaf Mountain. The crash happened seconds before the deputy’s arrival on the scene.

The driver, the only occupant in the car, was able to get out of the car safely before it became engulfed in flames. The driver was evaluated on the scene by EMS and refused further treatment.

The fire spread to the power pole and the start of the tree line. County Road 550 was shut down for several hours due to the risk of the pole and power lines falling. After the fire was extinguished, Alger Delta Cooperative Electric Company replaced the pole.

The sheriff’s department was assisted on the scene by Marquette City Fire, Marquette Township EMS, Marquette Detailing, Marquette County Road Commission, and Alger Delta Cooperative Electric Company.

According to Alger Delta Co-op’s outage map, power has been restored to all customer in that area that lost power because of the crash.

Original story Oct. 16, 9:31 p.m.:

Officials are responding to a car hitting a pole and catching fire on County Road 550 near Sugar Loaf.

The driver’s condition is unknown. As of 9:27 p.m., Alger Delta Cooperative Electric Association is reporting 113 of their customers are without power. We are working to confirm more details.
