Marquette County Clerk has reminders about political sign regulations

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Marquette County Clerk Linda Talsma has some reminders for anyone putting up campaign signs during the election.

Anyone placing signs on private property should make sure they have permission from the owner.

Signs placed along the state or interstate highways have to follow the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) regulations.

Signs must be placed 30ft from the center dividing line, or 3ft from the curb where one is present.

Talsma also encourages everyone to check with their city or township before placing signs.

“If you’re in a township or city, before you place signs, check with them and make sure that there’s not an ordinance on signs or something else you need to be aware of,” said Talsma. “Always make that phone call as well because that’s just a nice courteous call to make sure that there’s nothing more that their board has passed.”

According to MDOT, all political signs near highways must be taken down within ten days after the election.
