MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Northern Michigan University employees are getting a one-time boost in their paychecks soon after the Board of Trustees approved a proposal.
Thursday, the NMU Board of Trustees held a special meeting to discuss offering over 700 employees a one-time payment on top of the contractual increase already added previously.
The payments total approximately $2.4 million, according to President Dr. Brock Tessman. TOP union members will receive $3,500; AFSCME, AP, and NMUFA members and non-represented employees making less than $100,000 per year will receive $3,000; and NMU graduate assistants will receive $300.The one-time payments add 5% to10% annual average pay.
“I think that we wouldn’t be here today if it weren’t for the good work and good communication among a number of different folks,” said Tessman.
“I think we’ve all recognized that we had some extraordinary circumstances in the past few years, and this is definitely an out-of-the-ordinary event to do this, but I think that as a board member, it’s not only deserved but it’s needed, and therefore I’m very happy to make this motion and support this motion,” said Alexis Hart, Northern Michigan University Board Chair.
This motion passed with a 7 to 0 approval from the board and will be implemented in the fall.
