Minnesota Duluth and Findlay sweep Huskies

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The No. 20-ranked Michigan Tech volleyball team dropped a pair of 3-0 matches on Friday at the SDC Gym in the UP North Tournament. No. 14 Minnesota Duluth came out on top in the 10 a.m. match and Findlay won the 6:30 p.m. contest.

“It was not our day,” Tech coach Matt Jennings said. “I thought we were sluggish in both matches today. Minnesota Duluth and Findlay are both very good teams and made very few errors.

“We have a great battle tomorrow against St. Cloud. We have to find a chip on our shoulders and play with a little more fight.”

Minnesota Duluth 3, Michigan Tech 0

The Bulldogs improved to 5-0 on the season, handing the Huskies their first loss 25-19, 25-13, and 25-19. UMD hit .325 in the match and took advantage of seven aces.

Meg Raabe led the Huskies with 10 kills and nine digs. She had five kills in the first set and four in the third. Kaycee Meiners added eight kills while hitting .368. Rachel Zurek tallied seven kills and hit .429. Tess Hayes set the attack with 26 assists.

Findlay 3, Michigan Tech 0

The Oilers fell early in the day to St. Cloud State but bounced back over Tech, 25-18, 25-20, and 25-17. UF hit .434 and had three players hit double figures in kills.

The Huskies were led offensively by Meg Raabe with eight kills while Paige Wagner, Kaycee Meiners, Makena Wesol, and Rachel Zurek added six kills each. Tess Hayes tallied 27 assists and Amelia Albers led with nine digs.

The Huskies wrap up the weekend at 3 p.m. against No. 7 St. Cloud State. The SCSU Huskies defeated Findlay on Friday and play Northern Michigan at 10 a.m. Saturday.
