North Dickinson County school nears decision on new Superintendent as community input guides search

FELCH, Mich. (WZMQ) – North Dickinson County School District is close to appointing a new full-time superintendent after weeks of gathering community input and significant interest in the position.

The district’s search began about 4-5 weeks ago, with a focus on ensuring the community had a voice in the process. Interim Superintendent Mary Brayak, who started last Thursday, oversaw outreach efforts, including an online survey that was available for two weeks. The survey allowed stakeholders to share their preferences for the new superintendent’s characteristics and qualifications.

“All kinds of input” were gathered, which Brayak emphasized as crucial for the board’s decision-making process, even though the community wouldn’t be involved during the final reviews. The district also held meetings in conjunction with regular board sessions, where Brayak made presentations and engaged with staff and community members directly.

Despite the confidentiality surrounding specific applicants, Brayak revealed that there had been “some really good interest” in the position, leaving the district “pretty excited, and very hopeful.” With the job posting set to close tomorrow at 4 PM CST, the district aims to have a new superintendent in place by the Tuesday after Labor Day. However, the final timeline would depend on the applicants’ availability and how quickly they could relocate.

Brayak plans to remain in her interim role until at least September 3rd, assisting the district with the transition. She praised the school district, saying it had been “wonderful to work with” and expressed enthusiasm for the future superintendent, who she believes will be joining an “excellent community.”
