ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – On Wednesday, August 7, Escanaba’s Municipal Marina is hosting an event to teach kids about fishing.
Children and parents will learn about the fundamentals of fishing—including how to tie and cast lines and how to clean fish—safety, where they can fish in the city, and the importance of putting fish back in the bay for future generations. They can also take a tour of the DNR’s marina patrol boat.
The free event is sponsored by Team Wireless and Team Chevrolet. It is a partnership between the Municipal Marina and the Bay de Noc Great Lakes Sportsfishermen.
“We do raise walleye fingerlings and we plant them back in the bay,” said Kim Peterson, City of Escanaba Recreation Director and Harbormaster. “The fishing club is very important for that reason, but also we just think it’s very important for the younger generations to learn about fishing because that’s what our community promotes. We are surrounded by waterfront and we take great pride in our fishing community.”
