Third Olympics for Maryland native
MARQUETTE, Mich. – With less than two weeks to go before the 2024 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony on July 26, Northern Michigan Athletics will be highlighting the four Olympians with ties to Northern Michigan over the next four days. The first athlete is Helen Maroulis.
Maroulis was a member of the Olympic Training Site program at Northern Michigan from 2008-09 while attending Marquette High School. This will be the third Olympics for the 32-year-old, as she was previously a 2016 Olympic gold medalist, the first U.S. woman wrestler to claim an Olympic gold medal. She later added an Olympic bronze medal in 2020, becoming the first two-time Olympic women’s wrestling medalist in U.S. history. Maroulis is also a three-time World champion.
The Maryland native recently won a gold medal at the Poland Open, her tune-up event in preparation for the Olympic Games.
She will begin competition in Paris on August 8 at 11:30 a.m. local time/5:30 a.m. EDT.
