Traffic shift at US-41/M-28 roundabout project in Ishpeming begins July 9

ISHPEMING, Mich. – The traffic configuration will be changing at the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) roundabout project at the intersection of US-41/M-28 and Lakeshore Drive in Ishpeming, Marquette County.

Beginning Tuesday, July 9, westbound traffic will be shifted to the outside westbound lane and eastbound traffic will be shifted to the outside eastbound lane. This stage is expected to last about one day.

Turns from US-41/M-28 onto South Lakeshore Drive will be prohibited beginning with this stage and a posted detour for South Lakeshore Drive will be implemented. The Lakeshore Drive signal will be deactivated.

US-41/M-28 traffic will then be shifted to one lane in each direction on the north side of the highway. This may occur later Tuesday, July 9, or Wednesday, July 10. No turns will be allowed at North or South Lakeshore Drive and detours will remain in place. This configuration is expected to remain in place until mid-September.

Motorists should slow down and drive with caution in the work zone and expect delays during these traffic shifts.

MDOT is investing about $6.4 million to build a roundabout at this busy intersection. Work includes asphalt rebuilding, drainage, guardrail, retaining walls, lighting, signs, pavement markings, bridge widening with steel beams, deck replacement, bridge barrier construction, and approaches. This project began last fall and is expected to be completed in late October. Based on economic modeling, this investment is expected to directly and indirectly support 91 jobs.

This project is expected to improve safety and traffic flow in this area. Learn more about the benefits of roundabouts on the MDOT website.
