Remnants Barbershop Chorus donates $500 to Tri-County Safe Harbor

ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – A Delta County organization is raising their voices, as well as money, for worthy causes.

The Remnants Barbershop Chorus performs at events throughout the community. At this year’s spring concert, the group raised $500.

The Remnants Barbershop Chorus donated that money to the Tri-County Safe Harbor at their rehearsal this week. They then serenaded the recipient of the check, Tri-County Safe Harbor bookkeeper Sherri Parrett, with a song.

The Tri-County Safe Harbor provides shelter, advocacy, counseling, and other services to victims of sexual assault, stalking, and domestic violence. With the Escanaba facility and outreach offices in Menominee and Schoolcraft counties, Parrett says donations like these can have a major impact on men, women, and children who need help across the U.P.

“It is a very warming feeling,” she said. “We’re grant-funded, but the grants do not cover everything, so it is important that we get local funds. They are a wonderful organization.”

Remnants Historian Dan Zellar says supporting local organizations is an important part of the group’s mission.

“It’s by local and for local,” Remnants Historian Dan Zellar said. “It’s our neighbors that keep us going, it’s our neighbors that we love to provide our service to, and it’s our neighbors that support us. I’m glad to be a part of the barbershoppers to make an impact on my community.”

The Remnants Barbershop Chorus encourages men of any age interested in preserving the art of barbershop to attend one of their rehearsals. The group meets every Monday at 7 p.m. at the Catherine Bonifas Civic Center, located at 225 North 21st Street in Escanaba. Follow the group on Facebook for updates on upcoming performances.

Anyone in need of Tri-County Safe Harbor’s services can call the hotline at (906) 789-1166. Visit safe3c.com for more on resources and services available through Tri-County Safe Harbor.
